Sun City Card Club is stepping up its tournament game by finally giving players something they’ve been asking for—a TRUE Freezeout Tournament.

One of the most common gripes I hear at El Paso poker tournaments, amidst the friendly banter, is the lack of a genuine freezeout tournament. “I wish there was a tournament with no rebuys or add-ons—just one shot, and that’s it,” is a sentiment echoed by players time and again. And almost always, someone at the table chimes in, “A freezeout tournament!”
There is a freezeout tournament that Sun City hosts once a month, but it isn’t really a freezeout. The confusion at these events is palpable: “Wait, what, there’s an add-on? I thought this was a freezeout?” And that’s where I usually jump in, explaining, “Yup, I’ve tried telling Larry countless times—a freezeout doesn’t have add-ons!” Then someone inevitably points out, “It’s because it adds more money to the pot.” My retort? “Then don’t call it a Freezeout! Or just bump up the original buy-in instead.”
But after much vocal feedback from players (okay, mostly from me), Sun City Card Club is finally delivering the real deal—a TRUE Freezeout! No add-ons, no rebuys—just pure, old-school tournament poker. And to show that Sun City puts their money where their mouth is, there’s a **$1,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool**—no minimum number of players required. So yes. Even if you’re the only player who shows up, well then, you walk away with the grand. But I’m expecting at least two full tables to show up for this one.
The tournament kicks off at 6 PM, with late registration open until 10 PM. But if you max late reg, you’ll be sitting down with only 3.5 big blinds, and remember, it is a real freezeout, there are no add-ons. Here’s a pro tip: arrive early. Register by the end of Level 1 (6:20 PM), and you’ll receive an extra 5,000 in chips!
I have to hand it to Sun City’s owners, Matt and Larry—they really do listen to their players. Not every request is feasible, but they make sure every member feels heard. This Friday, those of us who love freezeouts will finally feel like our voices made a difference. When I thanked Larry for hosting this tournament, he said, “As a club owner, I’m always open to our members’ input. After 20-plus years in the poker industry, I still strive every day to give our players the best experience possible.”
So, I’ll see you all this Friday at 6 PM! Don’t forget to get there early for that extra 5K in chips. And as always, Sun City will have World Famous Food and Free Beer on the menu!
