The El Paso Poker headline of the summer is the man affectionately known throughout the El Paso poker community as Freddy Deebs aka DaDeebs aka Chuco Brunson aka El Paso’s best poker player, went back to back winning Sun City Card Club’s $20K GTD tournament and then taking a top ICM chop at House of Kings $100K GTD tournament’s final table. While we all know Deebs is a true pro who consistently crushes El Paso’s top cash games, it’s been a while since we have seen him in the winner’s circle of a multi-flight poker tournament. And for me, a long time fan of Da Deebs, it was extremely satisfying to see his summer tournament success.

I can’t remember exactly when I first met Deebs, but I do remember always being super impressed with his play. I mean, I once eliminated him from a tournament on a flip and I immediately texted my wife to brag about it. He has an above the rim ability to read his opponents. Putting in some sick bluffs, correctly making hero calls, and getting max value with marginal hands. His table talk is uncanny. He is the last guy you want to get into a battle of wits with. Even if you can get a good zinger in, he is only going to laugh completely unbothered, and then come up with something even more witty to get the whole poker table laughing even harder. While he can sometimes hurt people’s feelings by keeping it too real, he is more often El Paso Poker’s biggest sweetheart. He can be super kind and he is compassionate and concerned for the well being of people. But mostly, he is a killer poker player.

At least that is what I have seen and heard from others at the poker table. I wanted to learn more about his life and his general thoughts on poker, like who he considered to be El Paso’s best poker players. I know he’s a guy that doesn’t seek attention like this, and likes to keep his life private, so I felt lucky I was able to get this response out of him:

“Lol. You know when it comes to my career. I’m humble bro. I’ve always had my life situations and poker bankroll completely separated. Never mix them because that’s when true downfalls happen. Just been blessed with a personality that has gotten me a lot of friends in this world and that is what really matters. Poker is my life and I wouldn’t change anything from the last 25 years. From being robbed at gunpoint to celebrating history in El Paso poker. It’s been a good ride and hopefully it continues to be a great part of my life. Top three overall poker players in El Paso is hard to say. So many categories to place people under. I would rather keep that question to myself. It’s definitely been a great month and hopefully it’ll keep going this way.”

Deebs, we all appreciate everything you have done for the El Paso Poker scene. Even you just being a part of it is a big deal to all of us. Congratulations on your tournament success this summer, and we will see you on the felt!
